LifeVine Works is a non-profit organization geared toward youth, ages 8-17. Based in the Austin community of Chicago, we provide creative projects or “works” that serve as vehicles for learning the arts and sciences.
The name “LifeVine Works” was inspired by the Baobab tree (a.k.a. Tree of Life), as our projects give way to supporting youth as viable citizens who are crucial to economic empowerment and community development. Our works are rooted in innovative programming with the objective to 1) provide creative environments that will inspire learning and 2) serve as a reliable outlet for self expression and personal growth.
The “trunk” of our works are the components that support young people in a number of key ways:
Ownership - we’ve built projects that youth can own, providing them with voice and responsibility.
Mentorship - for strong character building and as a source of motivation.
Exposure to Opportunities - to build confidence, experience and skill level.
Parental Relationship Building - parental volunteerism to build community. |
|
Djembe Percussion Corps - a percussion ensemble of 30 young men who deliver powerful and energetic performances on the Djembe drum and other sacred African instruments! The Corps crafts African ornaments and instruments for sale as well. It also plans to attend the historic 2008 Chicago Bud Billiken Day Parade.
Fine Arts Theatre Club - an entourage of talented young actors and actresses in bloom who perform both acclaimed and original theatrical productions. Club members will learn the business of acting and have an opportunity to workshop with celebrities who will make cameo appearances in their productions.
Baobab Nursery & Garden - youth work as a scientific team as they explore the study of horticulture. They run the business of cultivating fresh fruits, vegetables and plants that are made available for sale to the public.
Voices Literacy - It is here where reading skills are strengthened and shared with community. This dynamic group reads to the elderly, provides tutoring assistance to those in need and launches an annual outdoor book sale.
As you can see, all works have an entrepreneurial component so that young people can realize the economic connection to the work they produce. Our link to business sponsors help provide valuable guidance and resources in the areas of sales and marketing.
